FieldServer Factory Training Class -- August 7-8, 2003

Image FieldServer Technologies offers a two-day training class every two months at our headquarters in Milpitas, California (in the San Francisco Bay area). This course is aimed at new owners of FieldServer gateways, integrators using FieldServer to meet interoperability needs of their clients and those interested in configuring and using a FieldServer in the future.

Our next training course for the year will be offered August 7-8 in California and there are still a few spaces open.

Remember that this course not only provides a full introduction to the FieldServer including configuration and set up, but also practical exercise in using the FieldServer with your specific product. The last day is dedicated to a hands-on plugfest in which participants are welcome to bring in their own device and see first hand how the interface works!

And, you walk away from this class with a new demonstrator FieldServer of your own that can be used for testing and configuration practice.

Contact FieldServer at 408-262-2299 x125, or 888-509-1970 x125, or sales@fieldserver.com today to reserve your space.

FieldServer links Data Aire and Liebert systems to Siemens Apogee

Image Gil-Bar Industries, an integrator in New York City, was challenged by their customer, a major bank in Manhattan, to network the control and management of 14 Data Aire precision building cooling systems in conjunction with a Liebert SiteScan into a Siemens Apogee Building Management System. Gil-Bar first approached Data Aire for a solution and Data Aire directed them to FieldServer Technologies.

According to Gil-Bar the installation went smoothly with minimal on-site adjustments and configuration changes. The Data Aire and Liebert cooling systems successfully interfaced to the Siemens Apogee. Gil-Bar states that this made the integration phase of the job run very smoothly and they will be using more FieldServers in the future to meet their customer’s integration needs.

FS-B2011 -- High Value, Small Package for LonWorks Interface

Image The FS-B2011 FieldServer meets the needs of those users who need to interface either a serial or an Ethernet based product to their LonWorks network. The FieldServer Technologies extensive library of drivers enables the user with a seamless and simultaneous communication between the LonWorks network and a range of serial devices such as York Chillers, Cleaver Brooks boilers, leading fire alarm panels, Carrier, Lutron, Caterpillar and many more. FieldServer gateways are used with the leading building automation systems.

Specific characteristics and capabilities of the FS-B2011 LonWorks Gateway include:

  • Allow binding of standard network variable types (SNVTs) and user network variable types (UNVTs)
  • Conforms to LonMark standards
  • Capable of transmitting data using the "min. max. and delta" (throttling and heartbeat) methodology in order to reduce network loading
  • Built-in diagnostics to help troubleshoot site problems during commissioning and operation
  • Supports the "service pin" methodology for commissioning LonWorks nodes
  • Can be configured optionally in a redundant (hot standby) pair for mission-critical applications
  • Provides the ability to label SNVTs that are mapped from third party devices so that the SNVT names make sense to the LonWorks network and system integrators
  • Provides user settable "self-documenting string" as its role in the network can vary
  • Provides capacity for all the network variables contained in
third party devices and controllers - up to the LonWorks limit of 4095 points
  • Capable of supporting polled and synchronous modifiers for network variables
  • Capable of reading and translating UNVTs and SNVTs
  • Configurable to supply a .XIF file for use in LNS tools and
    utilities
  • Capable of supporting more than two communication protocols on one platform.

Tech Tip - Converting FS-B2010 Serial Port from RS-232 to RS-485

The FS-B2010 Series FieldServers come in two configurations, FS-B2010-01 with the serial port set for RS-232 and FS-B2010-02 with the serial port set for RS-485. Now what happens when the integrator learns, only after the FieldServer is shipped and ready to install, that the serial device that they thought had a RS-232 interface had in fact an RS-485 interface?

There is no need to send the FieldServer back to the plant to be modified or reconfigured. Simply changing some jumper settings in the field will solve this problem. FieldServer Technologies maintains a library of ENOTES developed to solve common situations that might occur in the field. In ENOTE017 the integrator will find the solution to this particular problem of changing the configuration from RS-232 to RS-485.
